Traveling During COVID-19 – What to Consider

Sometimes you just can’t avoid traveling. Whether you’re a travel nurse or if you have to go out of town to care for an older relative, if you find yourself having to take an extended trip, here’s what you need to know to ensure your safety. SoBeNY offers beautiful, clean, and secure furnished corporate housing in Washington DC, Boston, Seattle, Miami, Miami Beach, New York, Los Angeles, and Denver.

Thanks to the global pandemic, traveling is currently fraught. Air travel and being in proximity to groups of people for an extended period of time can have significant repercussions, so taking every possible precaution is essential. Here are a few things to consider if you must travel during the COVID-19 crisis.

Get tested.

You might be required to produce a negative COVID-19 test if you wish to board a plane. While airlines are taking numerous precautions, there have nonetheless been multiple COVID-19 outbreaks on flights, particularly long-haul flights. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to know exactly what the failure was in the flights where the disease was spread. Perhaps passengers weren’t diligent about wearing masks properly; perhaps the ventilation system was disrupted.

Getting a COVID-19 test within two or three days of your departure will help you make the responsible decision about flying.

Wear an effective mask.

While cloth masks are suitable for brief, socially-distanced visits to the grocery store, the new, more insidious forms of the COVID-19 virus might be able to pass through standard masks during extended exposure, such as during a flight. The most effective masks are elastomeric N95 masks and high filtration KN95 masks. These are consistently high performing masks, and the only masks that can stop transmission even during high-risk circumstances.

Make sure your mask fits properly and that it doesn’t slip down beneath your nose. It is crucial that there are no gaps between the mask and your skin where air can penetrate and escape.

Learn the quarantine requirements of your destination.

Certain states currently have mandatory quarantine rules in force. Learn how long they are and what is required before you make your plans.

Practice common sense.

Before and during travel, be sure to:

  • Stay at home if you feel sick.
  • Do not come into contact with anyone who is feeling sick.
  • Wash your hands frequently for approximately 30 seconds, especially after spending time in a public space.
  • Carry hand sanitizer that is at least 60 percent alcohol.
  • Do not touch your face.
  • Keep tissues handy, and use them to cover your face if you have to cough or sneeze.
  • Stay at least six feet away from anyone outside of the people in your living circle.
  • Always wear a mask.

Stay in an extended stay furnished apartment.

If you have concerns about COVID-19, you should stay in a furnished corporate apartment. Unlike hotels, furnished corporate apartments do not have crowded common areas, and you are therefore not likely to come into direct contact with large populations of strangers. Moreover, each furnished unit is deep cleaned after every guest departs, and is extremely well ventilated. Hotels and homestays do not offer this consistent level of protection.

SoBeNY offers furnished corporate apartments in some of the most exciting cities in the U.S. If you are considering traveling, please visit our information center to learn how to lease a beautiful and secure short-term apartment.
